What is Diabetes? Diabetes explained - Peppertray

The World Health Organisation (WHO) released statistics in 2017, and according to that report, U.S.A has 33.9 percent of population suffering with pre diabetes. 9.4 percent population already suffering from the condition. It is increasing rapidly day by day. And it became the most common disease nowadays. It is locally known as “Sugar”.

"If you want to dramatically improve your self-esteem the one sure way to do this is to get very, very fit." Christopher Quinn, Self Esteem Self Help confidence

Diabetes is an ailment which indicates too high levels of blood sugar in the human body. It is considered a prominent source of stroke, blindness, heart failure, kidney failure, amputations etc. Diabetes can attack at any age. But it is mostly seen in the age of 30-35 than the older age people. Working professional women are greatly affected with this as compared to men.

What is Insulin?

What is Insulin

Insulin acts as a key to open the cells present in the human body. Pancreas gland releases insulin.

When human intakes food, that is converted into glucose or sugar. And at that time pancreas gland releases insulin, which helps to open the body cells to enter sugar or glucose into it to produce energy for the human body.

But when a person has diabetes, the system fails to work as pancreas doesn’t release the required amount of insulin, hence sugar level increases in blood, and that is known as Diabetes.

Types of Diabetes

There are 3 major types of diabetes are seen. i.e.

  1. Type 1 Diabetes
  2. Type 2 Diabetes
  3. Gestational Diabetes

From these, Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes are mostly seen.

  1. Type 1 Diabetes
  2. This type of diabetes is also recognized as “Juvenile Diabetes”. It is mostly seen in children and in teenagers, but it can attack at any age. It is considered the most critic type of diabetes. Here in the human body, the pancreas gland fails to produce insulin or produce a little amount of insulin which is not enough. Hence the people suffering from this type of diabetes are insulin-dependent. It means to stay alive; they have to take insulin in their day to day life. In this type of diabetes, it attacks the immune system of the body.

  1. Type 2 Diabetes
  2. This is the most common type of diabetes. It differs from type-1 diabetes. Here the people are not insulin-dependent. It mainly occurs due to obesity. This type of diabetes is also known as “Adult Onset Diabetes” as it mostly occurs after the age of 35. But nowadays it also attacks the youngsters. People having this type of diabetes produce their own insulin but that is not enough. Sometimes they help to open cells to enter glucose into that but some other time it doesn’t work; hence it is also called insulin resistance

  1. Gestational Diabetes
  2. This type of diabetes developed in case of women during their pregnancy. At that time the body doesn’t produce the required amount of insulin. But it cures after childbirth. It doesn’t arise in all women.  Women who are suffered from this type of diabetes may be at risk for developing type-2 diabetes in the future.

Symptoms of Diabetes

The person suffered from diabetes may feel the following symptoms. If you are going through these type of symptoms, then consult your doctor, unless which you can be at high risk.  Symptoms in case of type-1 diabetes appeared easily and quickly whereas, in the case of type 2 diabetes, it takes much more times to develop.

  1. Exhaustion and fatigue.
  2. Mysterious loss of weight.
  3. Dryness of mouth.
  4. Unclear vision.
  5. Increased hunger and thirst.
  6. Skin detachment.
  7. Vomiting.
  8. Yeast infections.
  9. Frequent urination.
  10. Numbness in leg and feet.
  11. Wounds not recover easily and take a lot of time to heal.

If you are feeling the above symptoms or you are more than 35 of age and not feeling well then you should consult your doctor. Without treatment, you can be into a high risk of damage to the nerve, heart problems, stroke, kidney failure, and other high-risk complications.

How to know you have diabetes

If you will see the symptoms of diabetes or there is a family history of diabetes, then consult your doctor. Your doctor may do some tests to check if you have the risk factors for diabetes. Your blood sugar level will be high if your pancreas gland is producing a little amount of insulin and if it doesn’t respond to the insulin.

Diabetes is a chronic disease which if untreated properly then various types of serious health complications like heart diseases, hypoglycemia,  diabetic neuropathy(damage of nerve), stroke, blindness or sight loss, gum diseases, kidney disorders, numbness of feet or legs, diabetic ulcers etc. will be occurred. So you need to consult a doctor and do treatment accordingly. The treatment includes a regular and timely test of blood glucose level, medications, exercise, diet plans, some home remedies etc.

Type 1 diabetes people have to take insulin injections as per their production of insulin from pancreas under the supervision of a doctor.

If you will manage these treatments in a proper way then you will live long with having diabetes.

What are the tests of diabetes:

There are mainly 4 types of tests through which you will get you to have diabetes or not. These are:

  1. Fasting Plasma Glucose Test:

  2. The test is taken at the morning time specifically before you have eaten anything. It requires a minimum of 8 hours of fasting after that only the test will be taken. This test results, if your blood sugar level is 126mg/dL or higher than that, then you are in diabetes. Oral Glucose Tolerance Test: This is a common test. This test is done by drinking glucose-containing beverages and your blood glucose level will be check-up in every 30 minutes up to 2 hours. After the test, if the blood glucose level is 200mg/dL or higher than that at 2 hours, then you are in diabetes. Haemoglobin A1C Test: It is a normal blood test shows how much amount of glucose attributes to your hemoglobin in RBC for the past two to three months. It shows that, if the A1C level in blood is 6.5% or higher than that, then you are suffering from diabetes.
  3. Random Plasma Glucose Test:

  4. This test doesn’t require an empty stomach. This results, if the blood sugar level is 200mg/dL or higher than that, then you might suffer from diabetes.

Foods to Avoid:

Diabetes is a prolonged disease that has extended wide-ranging amounts among children and adults all over the world. It has so many complications. So patients suffering from diabetes have to take care of themselves in a better way. Intake of wrong foods will also cause a lot of risks.

When people having diabetes ingest more amounts of carbs at a time, then their blood glucose levels can upswing to high-risk levels. Hence consuming low carb-containing food helps to inhibit glucose level in blood and helps to lessen the various complications of diabetes.

There are some foods which are best to intake while you are suffering from diabetes and there are many foods to prevent too. These are described briefly.

Trans Fats

These fats are totally harmful. These fats are formed by the addition of unsaturated fatty acid with hydrogen. These are mostly found in peanut butter, spreads, frozen dinners, margarine, crackers, creamers, muffins etc. These fats help to increase inflammation in the body.

These are highly processed foods and contain rich amount of carb which is not good for diabetes person.

Dried Fruit

When a fruit dries, its water content is decreasing and the sugar content grows into more rigorous which leads to developing complications in case of diabetes person.

Rice, Pasta & White Bread

These are also rich in the carb. Intake of this kind of food not only raises the glucose level in blood but also it decreases the function of the brain.

Raw and green vegetables like green beans, broccoli, tomatoes, carrot, leafy green, peppers etc. will be the best option whereas cooked vegetables with a lot of oils, more cooked vegetables, pickles etc. will be the worst option for the diabetic patient.

Sugar-Sweetened Beverages

These types of beverages are the worst choice for diabetes people. They have a rich amount of carbs. These types of drinks overloaded with fructose which leads to insulin resistance. These may be responsible for metabolic changes occur in the body.

Intake of these types of drinks may increase the complications of diabetes. Hence to prevent these risk agents, better you take a lot of water and club soda instead of these types of unhealthy drinks.

Dairy Products

Milk, yogurt, cream, cheese having low-fat dairy products are good to intake while these products with a high level of fat may cause a greater risk.

Oatmeal, millet, barley, cornmeal, quinoa, brown rice is such whole grains which are best choices, Whereas processed grain such as white flour, white rice, French fries, white bread etc. are the worst choices for a diabetic person.

Moreover try to prevent eating junk foods, salty and fried foods, and sugary foods and better to take blueberries, melon, grapes, oranges, legumes, beans, apples, avocados etc.

"Regular exercise, adequate nutrition and sleep, and time spent in creative play help to contribute to an overall sense of health." Amy Kay Watson, Working with Stress and Fear

Exercise or workout is really a good thing for both healthy and unhealthy person. Yeah, it’s true that every exercise is not for all. So you have to take proper care about that. There are some diseases which cure due to proper exercise instead of medication. But before starting exercise consult your doctor and ask which exercise will be right and for what time. Exercise helps to improve the production of insulin from the pancreas in the body. And it also helps to produce energy in the body, improves the heart, prevents stress and anxiety etc. While doing exercise check your blood sugar level of the body is remaining as it is or getting low, because if the blood sugar level will fall down with the extremely low amount then another disease named hypoglycemia will occur.   The exercises which result good for diabetes are aerobics (helps to reduce blood sugar level), swimming, cycling, gardening, walking, riding, push-ups, squats, lifting weights, lunges etc.

Risk factors of diabetes under your control:

There are some risk factors which lead to developing insulin resistance. You can control those activities by yourself such as

  1. Tobacco smoking
  2. Drinking alcohol
  3. Carrying surplus weight
  4. Irregular exercise or no exercise
  5. Unhealthy diet etc.

Home remedies:

With medication, tests, and exercises some home remedies are very useful to diabetes patients. So here are some natural home remedies you can try to live a better life.

Fresh Mango Leaves:

You can use fresh leaves of mango. Take some mango leaves and dry them properly and grind them to powder. Take the powder with water every morning and night. Or you can boil the leaves and let that drink cool and drink in the empty stomach on a daily morning.

Bitter Gourd:

Bitter gourd contains two necessary compounds that are momordicin and chain which is very helpful to reduce the blood glucose level in the body. You can take this by cooking it or you can grind it and rinse the juice and take it every morning.

Sun Light:

Sunlight is a rich source of vitamin D. Studies have found that deficiency of vitamin D also leads to diabetes. So take sunlight from 25-30minutes on early morning daily.

Goose Berry:

It is rich in vitamin C, helps to balance blood glucose level. Take the seeds out and grind it, rinse the juice. Take 2-3 tbsp. of juice with a cup of water daily.

Water is very useful in our life. So consume at least 3ltrs of water every day to stay away from dehydration.

It is an herb which is commonly used in the Indian kitchen. It helps to lower blood sugar level, controls diabetes. Soak 2-3 tbsp. of fenugreek in water overnight and at morning drink that water along with those soaked seeds.

Diabetes is common nowadays but if it will be ignored then it will create serious health hazards. In the case of children and youngster, it will be cured with treatments. But in case of an adult, it is very difficult to cure, but with proper medication, exercise and diet one can maintain the blood sugar level and live a better life.
